We'd rather publish one guide we actually trust than ten we cobbled together in an afternoon. Here's how a Backyard Leaf article usually comes together.
We start with a real question
Most posts begin with something we (or a reader) genuinely got stuck on — yellowing monstera leaves, seedlings flopping over, choosing between two watering cans. If it's not a question a real grower asks, we don't write it.
We test what we can
Wherever it's practical, we try the method or the product ourselves across a few plants and a few weeks before recommending it. Gardening is slow, so some guides sit in "we're still watching this" for a full season before they go live.
We cross-check the science
For anything involving plant health, soil, or pests, we check our advice against horticultural extension resources and reputable growers rather than repeating internet folklore. When experts disagree — and with plants, they often do — we say so instead of pretending there's one right answer.
We keep guides up to date
Plants don't change, but products and prices do. We revisit popular articles periodically, swap out recommendations that are discontinued, and update the "Updated" date at the top so you know how current a piece is.
Where we make money — and where we don't
Some articles include affiliate links, and we run advertising to keep the lights on. Neither one buys a spot in our recommendations. If we wouldn't put a tool in our own shed or a plant on our own shelf, it doesn't get recommended. Full details are in our affiliate disclosure.
